Julie and Julius Eichengreen, 1938. |
|
In
late 1941, Lucille, Karin, and Lucille's mother Sala
lived with the Eichengreens on Mlinarska Street in the
Lodz ghetto. They slept on the floor of an old
schoolhouse. At night, Julie would talk about her son
Dan, who had escaped to Cuba in 1939 aboard the S.S.
Orinoco. "After the war, together we will meet him
in America and walk down Broadway", she would say to
Lucille. On May 4, 1942, the
Eichengreens were taken from the ghetto, presumably
perishing in the gas chambers in Chelmno. A total of
320,000 people were extermined in the Chelmno
concentration camp.
