In early 1933, Hitler ascended to power in Germany. Soon after, Lucille noticed the increasing antisemitism where she lived in Hamburg, Germany. Children she had previously played with started calling her "Dreckjude" - dirty Jew. The man from whom her family rented their summer cabin told her that "Hitler will take care of the Jews!" When reminded that Lucille's family was Jewish, he said "I didn't mean you, of course. I'm talking about the other Jews - you're not like them..."
